Concrete honing is a way to process concrete surfaces in a way that increases their durability, tensile strength and overall makes them easy to maintain.
Though the concrete processing industry is still relatively new, the ways of improving concrete flooring are rapidly advancing. This provides customers with a wide array of solutions that are visually pleasing and architecturally sound.
One such product is the hone and seal polished concrete Brisbane or Gold Coast.
Honed concrete is usually achieved by taking an appropriate diamond polishing disc and applying it to the target surface after other preparatory work has been done. The problem arises when a client decides to hone concrete on his own and choose the polishing disc by himself.
The abrasive tool market for concrete is absolutely saturated with pads of all sizes, strengths and purposes. Determining which one is the most appropriate for any given situation comes down to experience, which technicians at My Floor have in abundance.

The three main conditions which factor into the choice of the right abrasive tool for concrete honing are:
Pads with a larger diameter (7″ or more) have admirable stability on large and flat concrete surfaces but are unstable on narrow strips of concrete. On the other hand, 3″ and 4″ diameter pads will stay perfectly flat in such situations, as well as perform extremely well on vertical surfaces and countertops.
5″ pad is overall a good choice for all situations. Beware of 4″ pads that often come prepackaged with concrete polishing tools, as they won’t perform as well and are mainly intended for stone floors.
Unfortunately, customers that don’t distinguish between these pad categories tend to generally choose only the cheapest possible variety. While this seems like a prudent choice at the beginning, these cheap pads can cause many problems later on and will wear out quickly.
This doesn’t mean that every pad costing $100 or more is necessarily the best, either. It simply comes down to years of experience in trying them all out.
Thickness is another factor that comes into the equation. Polishing pads can be anywhere from 2mm to 8mm thick and this also impacts their performance and behaviour. Generally speaking, the thicker a pad is, the longer it will last, but that comes with a certain degree of rigidity and inclination to cup when they dry. The thinnest pads are perfect for working on integral curved sinks as they are flexible, but they tend to wear out quickly.
The pattern on the pad tells you about the purpose it has in the polishing process and whether it is fit for aggressive polishing or not. When the concrete surface being processed needs to have a lot of stock removed, pads with deep and wide channels are the best, as they facilitate removal of the material. Conversely, pads with thin and shallow channels are best used only for polishing, else they will clog quickly and cause many problems, especially when the concrete dries out.
Paying attention to how a pad is formed and where its diamonds, which do all the actual abrasion, are located can tell you a lot about how well the pad will perform in your circumstances. In general, the best pad has a balanced mixture of channel width, depth and diamond clustering. For example, pads with very large channels and diamond clusters tend to be extremely inflexible, while a pad with channels that are proportionally larger than diamond clusters tend to have a good ratio of flexibility and ejection speed.
The hardest part is assessing the quality and quantity of diamonds in the pad. These two factors are what will ultimately decide how well your concrete surface is being processed, but they are almost impossible to assess with the naked eye.
Diamonds in a polishing pad come in a variety of sizes. The smaller the diamonds are, the slower the polishing process will be, but the result will be much finer. The trick here is to try and see if there is a large variation in the sizes of diamonds on the pad. If there are, the pad itself is most likely low quality. The highest quality pads will have diamonds of almost the same size, which is ultimately the biggest factor in getting a perfectly honed concrete surface.
