With the power of concrete polishing, you can turn a dull surface into a beautiful work of art. Polished concrete solutions is also stain-resistant, durable, and has a ton of other benefits! If you’re looking for the best-polished concrete in Brisbane Gold Coast, you need to use My Floor! We provide Brisbane, Gold Coast, and surrounding areas with elite-level polished concrete services. You may be wondering what polished concrete is and how the process works. We pride ourselves on being an educational resource for our clients, so let’s break it down for you!

What is Polished Concrete?

Concrete is one of the oldest material humanities has used for construction. Its origin traces back to around 5600 B.C.! It’s a simple mixture of sand, gravel, and cement. It’s so popular because it’s exceptionally abundant. While standard concrete is handy and has a multitude of different uses, it isn’t charming as a flooring option. Regular concrete is easy to chip, stain, crack, and wear down. It also is very limiting in its artistic options.

Thanks to recent innovations, we can now polish your concrete in a variety of different ways. Polished concrete involves grinding down the first few layers of the slab. This reveals the stone/aggregate underneath. From there, depending on customer preference, we can densify and polish the concrete or add topical concrete coatings. We can also add coloured dyes and decorative concrete cutting. The result is a shiny, impact resistant, beautiful surface. It’s a stylish look that’s easy to maintain and will stay in great shape for years.

Polished concrete is trendy in high end hotels, ritzy homes, and chic cafes. That’s because the floors add significant architectural interest to any space! A beautiful, unique floor with a brilliant design can do a lot for a business. It instantly communicates to your customer that your operation is clean and professional!

At My Floor, we provide the best polished concrete Brisbane and Gold Coast have to offer. That’s because we stay on the cutting edge of concrete processing science. Our expert team is always coming up with new ways to innovate with new techniques and ideas. We’re also still attending conferences and seminars to stay current on the latest developments.

You’ll love how easy it is to work with us at My Floor. We feature an in-depth polishing process that has a lot of exciting options for you to check out. First, let’s take a look at our general process before diving into specifics. A simple breakdown goes like this:

  • Grinding the concrete. We kick things off by grinding the concrete slabs using our concrete grinding machine fitted with 16 or 30 grit diamonds to expose the aggregate. Different aggregate exposure can be selected to achieve a nil stone exposure, minimal stone exposure or maximum stone exposure. From there, we can continue increasing the diamond grit size based on your preference of finish. This will remove all scratches and imperfections from the surface.
  • Grouting the concrete. All concrete will have cracks present, with our unique grouting process, we will repair cracks and fill holes that are within the concrete.
  • Sealing the concrete. At this stage, you have the option to either apply a concrete coating for internal areas which is called a Grind and Seal or mechanically polishing the concrete as listed below. For external areas we can we seal with a penetrating sealer or an anti slip concrete coating.
  • Polishing the concrete. Polishing starts with a 50-grit diamond resin pad. Based on your preference of gloss, we will steadily increase the pads accordingly.
  • Hardening the concrete. We apply densifiers during the polishing process to improve durability. We can improve the density of the surface up to 10-fold! It also prevents contaminants from building up over time.
  • Dyeing the concrete. If you’d like to add color to your surface, we have 25 different dye options to look at and choose! If you want your colors extra vibrant, we can spray multiple times. The right color can do wonders for adding extra atmosphere to your space.
  • Decorative cutting. Do you want to add brilliant shapes and patterns to your floors? No problem! Our expert team can add any type of print or design that you’d like.

So there’s a general overview of what our concrete polishing process looks like and entails. Now, let’s dive into the specifics of what you can choose for your polished concrete floor!

Step #1: Picking Your Polished Concrete Aggregate Exposure

Okay, so when you use My Floor, this will be your first big option to select. Picking your aggregate exposure simply means how deep we grind down the concrete slab for you. Think of it like this; the top surface of the concrete is smooth. A layer underneath that has a tiny bit of stone exposure. The more layers you go, the more stone and aggregate exposure you get. Here are the different levels you can select from:

  • Nil aggregate exposure/burnished concrete. This is the option with the least amount of exposure. It’s a highly desired finishing that can be difficult to achieve. That’s because the conditions of the existing concrete need to be exact for it to look right. You need a very flat, even surface before we polish the concrete. Nil or burnished exposure is smooth, shiny, and a joy to look at no matter where it is.
  • ‘Salt and pepper’/minimal aggregate exposure. Option number two is a very tiny amount of stone exposure. As a comparison, many people liken it to salt and pepper. To achieve this look, we grind off the top 1-2 millimeters of the concrete slab. Depending on where the aggregate is placed, some areas may have no exposure, while others may have a lot. It’s a popular look for homes, garages, restaurants, and industrial style workplaces. It’s also the most cost-effective option as it’s the most manageable exposure to achieve.
  • Full stone exposure. This is our most popular finish. That’s because it shows as much stone and aggregate as possible through your floor. It’s a highly decorative look that’s popular in homes, showrooms, and restaurants. As a rule of thumb, we grind down about 3-5 millimeters deep into the concrete slab. If we go any deeper, complications may arise.

Step #2: Selecting Your Polished Concrete Finish

Next up is selecting your desired polished concrete finish. There are several options to choose from, so let’s take a brief look at each one. That way, you can get a realistic feel for the benefits of each option.

  • Mechanical Polished Concrete. Or Diamond polished concrete. We recommend mechanically polished concrete for indoor surfaces only. That’s because this finish tends to get slippery when wet. It also has a hard time with liquids pooling on the body over long periods. As an indoor option, though, mechanical polishing truly shines. It’s got excellent stain resistance, reflects ambient light, is easy to maintain, and more! It also doesn’t require a topical concrete coating. You see, it’s the actual concrete itself that shines! As a result, there’s far less maintenance involved than other options.
  • Grind and Seal Polished Concrete. This is an excellent option for internal and external areas. That’s because it has superior slip resistance and won’t allow liquids to pool up over time. It involves grinding back the top layers of the concrete slab, and then applying a topical coating for a finish. Unlike mechanically polished concrete, the coating is what shines, not the concrete. As a result, you’ll have to perform re-coating every 3 to 10 years. Having said that, this is still an excellent outdoor/indoor option with a lot of customizability.
  • Hone and Seal Polished Concrete. Honed concrete is excellent for outdoor areas that see a lot of traffic. These include driveways, footpaths, porches, and more. The main catch with honed concrete is that it’s only available in a matte finish. However, the seal absorbs into the concrete instead of remaining on the surface. As a result, honed concrete is a longer-lasting option for outdoor areas that require non slip polished concrete.
  • Burnished Concrete Polished Concrete. This is concrete with no aggregate exposure at all. It’s completely smooth and polished. Since there’s no aggregate, you don’t get to select your level of exposure. Burnished is an excellent option if you’re looking for a smooth, shiny surface that shows the natural characters of concrete.

Step #3: Selecting Your Different Gloss Levels of Polished Concrete

Lastly, you’ll need to select your gloss finish. There are three options available. Each has its own set of advantages, so let’s take a look at each one.

  • Matte finish polished concrete. This is a more industrial/natural look that’s used in commercial floorings and homes. It’s a low-maintenance option that will stay looking great for years. Also, dust will not show up as quickly on a matte finish. That means that you won’t have to be as rigorous in your cleaning efforts. This is an excellent option for businesses that want a clean, smooth floor without having to do a lot of upkeep.
  • Satin finish Polished Concrete. This produces a low-sheen finish that’s pretty and easy to maintain. It’s an ideal option for warehouses, factories, airport hangers, businesses, and more. Its level of shine is in between a matte and semi-gloss finish.
  • Semi-gloss finish polished concrete. This is a trendy choice because you get the best of both worlds. It’s still low maintenance, but it’s very shiny and bright. Dust and dirt will have a hard time showing up, and you’ll get a ton of ambient light reflection. That means that you won’t have to spend as much on electricity to light up your store or home!
  • High-gloss finish polished concrete. This is for clients that really want the wow factor for their floors. It provides genuinely stunning reflections that are sure to turn heads. This option is popular in high-end homes, hotels, showrooms, and ritzy offices.

Mechanically Polished Concrete

For indoor flooring surfaces, mechanically polished concrete (MPC) is by far the best. It’s clean, durable, and very affordable in the long run. Of all our flooring options, it’s the easiest to maintain. That’s because it doesn’t require a topical coating that will wear down over time. Other options, such as grind and seal feature topical layers that need re-applied every 3-10 years. While MPC is more expensive to install, it makes up for it with its reduced low maintenance cost over a 10 year period. The ongoing concrete cleaning is all that you’ll have to pay every 1-3 years.

Here are the key benefits you’ll get out of Mechanical Polished Concrete:

  • Superior slip resistance Flooring.
As long as it’s inside and the surface is dry, Mechanical polished concrete has excellent slip-resistant properties. In fact, it’s superior to waxed surfaces! This makes it ideal for homes with small children.
  • Flooring that improves health.
Mechanical Polished Concrete is refined to the point where it won’t allow bacteria or toxic mold to grow. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, you’ll love our polished floors!
  • Flooring that increases ambient light reflectivity.
A mechanical polished concrete by My Floor will increase the natural ambient lighting in your space. This translates into lower electricity bills!
  • Flooring with Fantastic aesthetics.
You’ll never see any fading, yellowing, or unattractive dirty grout lines. Also, you won’t have to go to the trouble of re-coating your floor!
  • Stain-resistant Flooring option.
Water, oil, and other liquids won’t stand a chance at staining your Mechanically polished floor! That’s because our process uses penetrating concrete sealers. Nothing can get in for around 1-4 hours, giving you plenty of time for those accidental spills!
  • Flooring that’s Easy to maintain.
All that you need to clean your floors is a dry microfiber mop followed by mopping with a Ph neutral detergent. Say goodbye to spending hours having to clean your floor meticulously!
  • Flooring with Versatility.
There are several brand name Mechanical Polished Concrete options that we carry out at My Floor. These include the Hiperfloor polished concrete and Signature Floor polished concrete. Both have their own unique set of advantages. Hiperfloor can transform any surface into a brilliant work of art. Signature Floor consists of 10-15 steps that ensure a truly high-end finish.

Bear in mind, Mechanical polished floors are NOT recommended for outdoor areas. That’s because due to its high polished smooth surface, it can get slippery when excessively wet. Not only that, but liquids pooling on the surface for long periods of time can lead to wear and tear. If you’re after an indoor concrete polishing option in Brisbane or Gold Coast, Hone and Seal Polished Concrete is ideal!

Grind and Seal Polished Concrete

Grind and seal polished concrete is a great option for both indoor and outdoor concrete areas. The process involves grinding back the top layer of the concrete slab to show as little or as much stone as you want. Once we reach the perfect level of stone exposure, we switch to even finer concrete diamond grinder heads. These will remove any visible imperfections and will smooth the surface for the coating application. We can also grout the concrete to fill in any cracks and pinholes if you’d like a more refined surface.

Grind and seal polished concrete is an excellent option for outdoor concrete and internal areas susceptible to water and spills. Thanks to its top coating, which acts as a barrier to the surface it can withstand the harshest of outdoor environments. Not only that, but at My Floor, we take it a step further. We offer a UV-stable concrete coating finish that will stop your sealer from yellowing! That way, your polished concrete will stay looking sharp for years to come.

The main benefits of grind and seal systems include:

  • Lower initial cost flooring.
Grind and seal polished concrete is actually the cheapest initial cost for installation. Bear in mind that the topical coating will show signs of wear, resulting in a re application every 3 to 10 years. This depends on how much traffic your concrete receives on a regular basis. Once the coating wears or scratches excessively, you’ll need to re-apply another top coat sealer. If you need a cost-effective concrete solution for the short-term, grind and seal is the best!
  • Bacteria resistant flooring.
Grind and seal produces a non-porous surface. That means contaminants like bacteria and germs won’t have a chance to latch on! This makes it an ideal choice for homes and businesses that need to stay as clean as possible.
  • Slip-resistant flooring.
Grind and seal concrete systems are resistant enough that they’re safe for outdoor use. This differs from MPC, which can get very slippery outdoors. With grind and sealed polished concrete, you can choose between a smooth surface or for areas requiring non slip, you can enhance its grip even further by adding beading or grit to your concrete coating.
  • Choice of Gloss Included.
You can select from a matte, semi-gloss, or high-gloss finish based on your preference. In fact, the cost is the same for each! This makes grind and seal polished concrete systems an attractive option if you’d like a high-gloss finish to add no extra cost!
  • Tons of Applications.
Grind and seal systems have a ton of uses in residential, commercial, and industrial areas. They’re great for garages, outdoor patios, cafes, warehouses, and more! Their affordability makes them great options for adding flair to a property on a budget.
  • Low Maintenance Flooring.
Besides having to re-apply the coating every few years, there’s little to no upkeep you need to do! Your floor will stay clean and bacteria-free with little to no effort on your part. What’s not to love about that?

In short, grind and seal polished concrete is a fantastic option for businesses, homes, and more. It’s cost-effective, works outside, and is a ton of fun to look at no matter where it is. Don’t wait to reach out to us at My Floor if you’d like a grind and seal polished concrete system installed! We’ve got the best Grind and Seal polished concrete Brisbane and Gold Coast has around, so don’t be shy.

Hone and Seal Polished Concrete

Does your home in Gold Coast have a driveway that sees a lot of traffic? Then honed concrete is an excellent option for you. Honed concrete is also perfect for pools, footpaths, and areas with heavy traffic. That’s due to its superior durability and impact-resistance as compared to other options. The main reason why it’s so strong is because of its finish.

You see, honed concrete is only available in a matte finish. You can’t get honed concrete in a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish. Honed concrete also has a penetrating sealer to help prevent stains. Hone and seal systems differ from grind and seal in that the sealer absorbs into the concrete rather then sits on the surface. In other words, there is no top coating! Instead, the sealer lies several layers deep into the honed concrete. As a result, honed concrete lasts for decades and will never scratch or wear away.

Essential benefits of hone and seal polished concrete systems include:

  • Superior durability.
Honed concrete is by far the strongest and most resistant external concrete finish that we sell. Thanks to its inner sealing, it will not peal or scratch at all! It will also last decades on its own with no maintenance. That’s why it’s so perfect for outdoor areas with tons of foot and vehicle traffic.
  • Low maintenance.
Since it’s so durable and resistant to weathering, you don’t have to do any major maintenance. It will stay in pristine condition for years and years to come! It’s also effortless to keep clean with a broom or microfiber mop. A high pressure clean is recommended when ever the floor shows signs of heavy dirt from foot traffic.
  • Stone exposure options.
While you can’t select a finish, you can still control your stone exposure. Whether you want nil or full stone exposure, you can do it all with honed concrete!

Burnish Polished Concrete

Are you creating an industrial looking space on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane that you’d like to have totally smooth, even floors? Would you also want your floors to stay clean and easy to maintain? Then you’re going to love our burnish polished concrete. ‘Burnish’ simply means that there is absolutely no stone/aggregate showing. The process involves barely grinding back any of the concrete as not to show any stone. We mechanically polish the surface using specially made diamonds. Burnish is a smooth, refined look that’s great for garages, department stores, and more.

Advantages of burnished concrete systems include:

  • Clean, even look.
Since there’s no aggregate, your floor will look buttery smooth. Providing a subtle clean, concrete look for an industrial style design
  • Durability.
Burnished concrete is UV stable and can withstand heavy indoor traffic. It’s an excellent choice for airport hangers, factories, warehouses, high end industrial style homes and more.
  • Water-resistant surface.
You won’t have to worry about liquids heavily staining your burnished concrete floor! That’s because when done correctly, burnished concrete is water-resistant. It’s also effortless to keep clean, and there’s little to no maintenance involved. It’s a great option if you’d like a smooth easy to clean floor

One of the best features of polished concrete is how easy it is to maintain in the long run. A simple schedule of mechanical and chemical maintenance is all that you need! This will ensure that your floor stays in the pristine condition that it was when you first got it polished! At My Floor, we will provide you with the education you need to take care of your floors properly. Let’s take a look at what you need to remember!

As a rule of thumb, you should perform simple maintenance a few times a week. Bear in mind, it all comes down to how much traffic your concrete sees in any given week. If your concrete sees a lot of heavy traffic each day, you should clean it more often. Be sure to:

  • Immediately clean up any spills or dropped materials. This will prevent etching and staining on your floor!
  • Dry mop or auto scrub every day. For higher traffic areas, be sure to spot clean them often. As long as you dry mop the entire concrete surface, even high-gloss finish floors will stay looking fabulous.
  • Use plain water or a neutral cleaning agent. A lot of common cleaning agents found in stores are too harsh for polished concrete. More often than not, plain old water will do a great job. Non-reactive cleaning agents are also sufficient to use.

To help retain the brilliant shine of your floor, you need mechanical maintenance. My Floor can carry out routine concrete cleaning for your polished concrete floor. Below is a list of products and processes we use to maintain your concrete floor.

  • Diamond impregnated pads
  • A buffer, floor burnisher, or auto scrubber

We attach the diamond-impregnated pad to the underneath of our floor buffer. From there, we run the head over the entirety of the polished concrete surface. My Floor can use the pads both wet and dry, depending on the manufacturer’s requirements.

As you can see, maintaining your polished concrete floor isn’t a hassle at all. After all, its low maintenance is a big reason why people pick polished concrete in the first place! To get access to the best polished concrete Brisbane and Gold Coast have to offer, you need to use My Floor! Don’t wait to contact us today for a free estimate by calling 1300 693 566.

So you’re on the fence about installing polished concrete in your home or office. Here’s a detailed list of the pros and cons of polished concrete to help you make up your mind!

Pro: Stain, Impact, and Water Resistant.

Regular concrete will stain very easily. It also gets quite slippery when wet, creating a hazard. Bare concrete can also chip and break upon impact. Polished concrete, on the other hand, is the opposite. It’s both stain and water-resistant thanks to its coating or penetrating sealant! This makes it ideal for work environments that feature spills, falls, and traffic. After a full day of hard work, your floor will look like nothing even happened.

Pro: Affordability and low maintenance.

Polished concrete will stay in excellent condition for years to come. It’s also straightforward to keep clean with little effort. Also, it’s a very affordable option that looks great and stays clean!

Pro: It’s aesthetically pleasing.

A big reason why polished concrete is so popular is because of how incredible it looks. If you get a high-gloss finish, it’s shiny and ritzy enough for any five-star hotel! Its reflectiveness will also save you money on electricity!

Con: Hardness can be uncomfortable.

If you run a bar or restaurant, polished concrete can be hard to stand on for hours. Polished concrete is also grouted and densified for maximum hardness. Luckily, you can mitigate this problem with comfortable bar mats.

Con: Polished concrete can be cold in winter.

If your environment gets especially cold in the winter, your floors can get quiet cold. That’s because polished concrete doesn’t generate heat. However with correct natural lighting, polished concrete retains the heat from sunlight and releases it slowly throughout the night.

Interior Polished Concrete

At My Floor, we have quite a few polished concrete options for our customers. They include mechanically polished concrete options like Hiperfloor and Signature Floor. Other options include clear epoxy coatings, honed concrete for outdoors areas, and grind and seal both smooth and non slip.

It’s easy if you think about it like this. Mechanically polished concrete is for indoors only. However, grind and seal is an option for both indoors and outdoors.

Mechanically polished concrete (MPC) does not involve any topical coatings. Rather, it’s the concrete itself that’s buffed down and highly polished until it shines. In this sense, MPC is the truest form of polished concrete. Since there’s no topical coating that will wear away over time, there’s very little upkeep. The surface is also 10 times stronger than its natural form, so it’s near impossible to crack. However, MPC can get very slippery when wet. For this reason, it’s considered an indoors only option.

On the other hand, grind and seal systems involve applying a topical coating at the end. The concrete gets ground down to expose the desired level of aggregate exposure. From there, the installers prepare the surface for the top coating of either polyurethane or epoxy. While this coating will wear away or get scratched over time, grind and seal is a more cost-effective option. Also, you can apply a special grit to the top layer to make it slip-resistant. For this reason, grind and seal systems have great applications outdoors. The sealer will last around 2-7 years, depending on the traffic the surface sees. Both grind and seal and MPC systems come in matte, semi-gloss, or high-gloss finishes. When the coating starts to lose its luster, My Floor can sand back the top layer of the coating and apply 1 more coat of either polyurethane or epoxy to return the floor to its original condition.

Honed concrete is the outdoor counterpart to mechanically polished concrete. It’s less refined than MPC, usually ground down to a 60 or 120 grit as the final grit. This is the best grit level for slip-resistance. That’s why honed concrete is so popular in outdoor areas. While it does make use of a penetrating sealer, it does not remain on the surface. Rather, it seeps down into the concrete to further reinforce it.

MPC is more of a complicated process. It involves grinding the concrete to a polished finish. It’s for indoor applications and looks very ritzy and pristine. Unlike honed concrete, you can order MPC in a matte, semi-gloss, or high-gloss finish.

Most of the time, it is no more slippery than any other polished flooring surface. However, add water/moisture to the picture, and it’s a different story. If your floor uses MPC (mechanically polished concrete), it is highly susceptible to becoming slippery when wet. That’s why these floors need to stay completely dry to avoid accidents or falls.

If you need a non-slip polished concrete option, we recommend either grind and seal or honed concrete. Both of these options are fantastic, but honed is the way to go for heavy-traffic public outdoor areas. That’s because honed concrete features a grit level that’s ideal for anti-slip. Not only that, but it’s penetrating sealer adds further reinforcement for heavy traffic.

Sure! We can add a slip-resistant coating to any grind and seal system. Honed concrete is also naturally slip-resistant due to its grit level. For MPC, it’s slip-resistant whenever the floor is dry. Bear in mind that it will get very slippery when wet.

Industrial areas see lots of foot and vehicle traffic, as well as spills and high-impact falls. As a result, you need a floor that’s very durable, chemical-resistant, and slip-resistant. We would recommend one of our epoxy coatings or grind and seal polished concrete. My Floor excels at both options, so don’t wait to give our attentive staff a call today!

It’s possible, but you’re best off with a grind and seal system with a non-slip compound.

When grinding and polishing the existing concrete, we are unable to change the colour of the concrete or the aggregate. We will grind and expose the aggregate that is currently in your concrete. If you require a special coloured floor, we are able to install our polished concrete veneer topping, allowing you to choose from 30 different coloured mixes.

Concrete will always crack. My Floor can repair existing cracks throughout the grinding and polishing stage, however if your concrete moves (which it most likely will over time) these cracks may reappear again. Don’t worry to much about this, we offer a crack repair service for a small fee to ensure your cracks are maintained throughout the lifespan of your polished concrete floor.

Outdoor Polished Concrete

Of course! Bear in mind that you shouldn’t use an MPC system for outdoor use. As previously mentioned, it can get very slippery when wet. That’s why My Floor recommends honed concrete or a grind and seal system instead! Grind and seal systems and honed concrete are great for patios, driveways, pool areas, and more!

My Floor has several exciting options for polished concrete. They include mechanically polished systems like Hiperfloor and Signature Floor. We also have a wide selection of epoxy coatings, grind and seal systems, and honed concrete. As you can see, we’ve got plenty of exciting options to suit all your flooring needs!

You can think of them as polar opposites of each other. MPC is the #1 indoor option for polished concrete, and honed concrete is the #1 outdoor option. Honed concrete is less refined and has a rougher grit. As a result, it’s slip-resistant and extra durable, making it perfect for outdoors.

MPC, on the other hand, is a highly refined process. It involves grinding the concrete down until it shines. It comes in a variety of gloss finishes and adds elegance to any flooring surface. However, it’s highly susceptible to becoming slippery when wet! That’s why MPC systems get used exclusively indoors.

Honed concrete is the #1 option for polished concrete outdoors. That’s due to its tough grit and impregnating sealant. Unlike grind and seal, the sealer does not stay on top of the concrete. Instead, it seeps down into the middle of the slab for increased durability and slip-resistance. As a result, honed concrete thrives in busy outdoor areas like walkways, driveways, patios, pool areas, sidewalks, and more!

Not at all! You see, honed concrete is a far less refined process than MPC or grind and seal. It doesn’t require a top coating and has no gloss options other than a matte finish. Our skilled team at My Floor can knock out your installation in just a few days! We’re also great about working during off hours so that you can go about your business as usual.

Yes, there is! If you’ve got an indoor/outdoor area that you’d like to have matching polished concrete, you need to use grind and seal concrete. That’s because we can add a non-slip additive to the top of the outdoor portion of the concrete. That way, you can enjoy a seamless transition from inside to outside without the risk of slipping.

It all depends on the type of polished concrete system that you use. MPC systems are ideal for indoor use. By nature, they are slip-resistant. This changes once you add water into the equation. That’s when MPC floors become very slippery. If you’re looking for a slip-resistant polished concrete floor, we recommend grind and seal or honed concrete instead.

Yes, there is! You have several no-slip options for polished concrete. While MPC is naturally slip-resistant when dry, things change when it gets wet. That’s why for non-slip concrete, we would recommend honed concrete or grind and seal. Both of these options have a no-slip option available for extra resistance!

Concrete Options and Installation

We will dye both slabs with the exact same colour dye. Due to the nature of concrete, however, each dye absorbs colour differently. That means that the colour uptake may vary slightly. Having said that, our experts at My Floor will get them looking as close as possible. We are unable to change the colour of the aggregate in the different concrete floors. If you have 2 different concrete floors and are after 1 consistent colour all the way through, we recommend installing a polished concrete veneer over the surface of both floors.

If you’re constructing a new building or extension, you’ll pour and install a brand-new concrete slab. In doing so, you can choose from a wide range of concrete mixes that are available. At My Floor, we can polish Boral, Hanson, Holcim, or any other concrete mix. You can also choose the level of aggregate exposure during the grinding process.

If you’re renovating and are working with an existing slab, it’s a different story. In this case, you’ll be bound to the dye and aggregate exposure that’s already present. Your only real option is to add another layer of concrete over the existing surface, we call this a polished concrete veneer. If this is not an option, we find at My Floor that our customers are happy with our polished concrete no matter what the colour or stone exposure is as this is generally apart of the polished concrete characteristics!

If you’re working with an existing slab, then you’re at the mercy of whatever is already inside of it. If you really don’t like your floor’s colour, you can add a penetrating coloured dye to change the colour of the cement. This will not change or alter the existing aggregate colour.

When pouring a new slab, you have the full spectrum of customization at your fingertips. You can choose the colour of your cement and stone from a number of suppliers.

Be sure not to overlook the importance of the colour of your slab! Believe it or not, this can have a huge impact on your floor’s look and cost. The same stone can look drastically different with various dyes applied to it!

In general, we handle the polishing and grinding of the slab only. We do have a network of concreters that we know and can vouch for, and we can provide their contact information.

Please contact the My Floor team and we will happily refer you to our recommended concreters

We have a grouting procedure at My Floor that can fill in tiny cracks. If you select our Mechanical Polished Concrete MPC system, it will harden the top surface tenfold to help prevent cracks. Should any cracks appear in any of our systems, we can repair them. Bear in mind that with concrete, you can never fully guarantee no cracks at all.

We don’t recommend that you use in-slab heating with polished concrete. The reason is that the heat will dry up the densifiers and sealants that we used to polish your surface. This means that the life of your coating will decrease significantly. Not only that, but the heat will also make your surface more prone to cracking.

If you run into a client that’s insistent upon using in-slab heating, here’s what we recommend. After the slab is fully cured and the project is complete, turn the water temperature up by one degree Celsius per day. This will do a lot to prevent the concrete from cracking. Not only that but be sure not to go over 30 degrees Celsius for the water temperature. You should also note that we grind the slab down from a range of 1-6mm. That means you have to put plenty of thickness between the heating pipes and the slab!

Your builder can put up internal frames after at least 3 or 4 days. This timeframe is subject to the weather. If there’s constant rain or high humidity, it will lengthen the curing time, so you’ll have to wait longer.

Your builder can put up internal frames after at least 3 or 4 days. This timeframe is subject to the weather. If there’s constant rain or high humidity, it will lengthen the curing time, so you’ll have to wait longer.

To preserve your aggregate, please tell them to wait at least 48 hours. That’s because foot traffic can drastically alter the aggregate placement. In other words, it will push the stone deeper into the slab where you can’t see it. This will result in ugly bald patches on your floor!

You should contact your supplier of choice and specify to them that you intend to polish the slab. Upon hearing this, they will alter the mix to a 32/10/80 mix for adequate stone exposure. If you want nil exposure, ask them to pour 40MPA if they can. Also, a lot of suppliers have their own decorative mixes designed for polishing. If you’re going to use a standard mix, make sure you request freshwater over recycled water. That’s because freshwater will minimize the risk of discolouration in the finish.

If you accidentally step in a wet slab, you can fill it in with the concrete mix. Make sure that the mix you use contains the full amount of aggregate already present on the floor. You may still see a footprint-shaped bald spot in the stone exposure if you fail to do so.

Almost any concrete slab can go through the polishing process by My Floor. If your slab isn’t to your exact specifications, we can still grind and polish it at My Floor. The only downside is that you may not get the exact finish you were after. For example, if your slab has a lower MPA, you might not be able to achieve nil exposure.

We recommend your concreter use a fillet for the noses of all the stairs. That way, we’ll be able to finish them with the same stone exposure as the floor. If you don’t use a fillet, you will end up with full exposure only. Also, make sure you heavily vibrate the risers to settle the slurry up against the formwork. If you don’t do this, you will get large aeration holes that will ruin your stairs. Also, the design of the steps is crucial. If there are lots of angles or intricate parts, we might not be able to polish them. Please check with us by sending the stair designs to use prior to pouring.

Care and Maintenance

Polished concrete is very easy to keep clean! In fact, that’s one of its main selling points. All you have to do is a weekly mopping using hot water. If you’re going to use a cleaning agent, make sure that it is PH-neutral. Any acidic or alkaline cleaners can harm your floors. For daily dusting/spot cleaning, use a microfiber dust mop. If your floor suffers any spills, it’s important to clean it up immediately. If you let it sit, it will soak into your floor. If your unsure, please call our team and we will happily help you.

A big selling point for MPC is that it will never fade! Also, with proper maintenance, it won’t discolour either. If you’re using a grind and seal system without a UV-stable coating, it will discolour, crack, and peel over time. My Floor always use UV stable coatings for our grind and seal polished concrete finishes

Be sure to use a PH-neutral cleaner followed by clean water. Also, clean up any spills that occur as soon as you can to avoid them soaking into the floor. For daily cleaning, a microfiber mop will get the job done just fine.

Yes, we can! In particular, our mechanical polished concrete system is great for easy small repairs. If you get any tiny cracks or imperfections, we can take care of them in no time. Grind and seal systems are a little more tricky. The repairs need to cover the entire area to avoid any differentiation on the surface.

Normally, it shouldn’t stain at all. At My Floor, we use a sealant on our finishes that prevents stains. Having said that, it’s best to clean up any spills immediately, so they don’t get a chance to soak in.

It all depends on the type of polished concrete system that you have installed. For grind and seal, you need to reseal them every 2-10 years, depending on the amount of traffic your surface sees. For MPC/Hiperfloor, you can reapply the penetrating sealer every 7 to 10 years, and you should be fine.

New Builds and Our Process

If you’re pouring a brand-new slab for a home or extension, you’ll get the most options. You can choose from the vast amount of concrete mixes available in your area. At My Floor, we can grind and polish any type of mix available on the market. If you’re working with an existing slab, your options are a bit more limited. You won’t be able to select aggregate exposure at all. If you’re not happy with the colour, you can add a concrete dye on top of the existing slab or install a polished concrete veneer.

You should consult with us at My Floor from the moment you start building your home. That’s because we have important information to give your concreter! We will advise them on how to properly pour the slab to get the best polishing results.

Before we arrive for the polishing, allow 28 days for your concrete to completely cure. That way, we can grind and polish it all at the same time. The ideal scenario is that we polish after the frame and roof is installed, but before any internal cabinetry, plaster and skirting.

You can if you’re pouring a new slab of concrete! If you’ve got an existing slab, you’ll have to work with what you’ve already got. If you’re unhappy with your existing concrete color, we can add another dye on top of the surface.

If you’ve got a brand-new slab to work with, you have a ton of options. You’ll be able to choose your own colour and aggregate exposure from a number of different suppliers. You can also choose the colour of your aggregate exposure! Be sure not to underestimate the costs for the colour of your concrete. Changing the colour of your concrete can add additional costs by your builder or concreter to cover the supply of concrete!

Not usually. At My Floor, we grind and polish the concrete only. If you need a reliable concreter to pour slabs for you, we’d be more than happy to recommend a few!

For most jobs, the rule of thumb is a minimum of 28 days for the concrete to cure. If the concrete is not sufficiently cured, a strong bond will not occur between the sealer and the floor. There is an exception to this rule, though! If you contact us at My Floor and we work with your supplier, we can complete the polishing in 7-10 days as soon as the slab gets poured. That’s because we have a special combination of 2 specific products that we use on the day of the pouring. Reach out to us at My Floor for more information about this process!

If you’re polishing in the standard timeframe of 28 days, we need access to the floors after the building is watertight. We’ll need access to the floors prior to installing any plaster, skirting, and cabinets. If your home has a unique layout with lots of windows, staircases, and suspended hearths, let us know ahead of time. That way, we can adequately prepare to finish your floors without any complications!

As long as the weather stays normal, you can put up internal frames after 3 days. Extended periods of rain or humidity will lengthen this timeframe.

Please wait a minimum of 48 hours before walking on your new floors. Walking on it before this time can result in the aggregate sinking into the slab. This will reveal bald spots in the stone exposure that will look terrible. If you do mistakenly step in your wet slab, be sure to fill it in with a concrete mix containing aggregate. That way, you’ll completely smooth over the footprint with no residue.

Sadly, this isn’t an option. Polished concrete involves a strict step-by-step process to do it right. That means every step needs to be done over the same floorspace before the next step can occur. My Floor will require total access to all areas when we are onsite ready to begin. However, if completing each room separately is a necessity, additional costs to cover extra time may apply.

Our polishers can only come 3-6mm away from a finished surface or floor. So if your home is at handover and the floors are complete, there’d be areas around the edges that we can’t reach. As a result, your floors would look unfinished. Also, our circular discs cannot reach inside internal corners. Not only that, but our equipment can damage your fixtures and furniture. Our equipment would also leave dust to settle into your appliances and electronics. My Floor can complete polished concrete floors after handover, however you will have to allow for potential damage to surrounding surfaces.

It depends on a case-by-case basis. Generally, we would much prefer to do it beforehand. That’s because our equipment and tools cannot reach finished edges. This would lead to the floors appearing incomplete. Not only that, but there’s the risk of damage to your new doors.

If you’ve got a grind and seal system, then sadly you’ll have to re-coat and seal the entire floor space. If you’ve got an MPC system in place, spot repairs and patches are quite easy. This depends on the location of the damage and how thorough it is. If you’re using our quick-cure process and are using our floor protective coating, damages should not occur. Any repairs to your damaged floors incur additional costs.

Benefits of Polished Concrete Systems

Polished concrete has wonderful thermal mass properties. That means that it can absorb heat and release it slowly. If it’s warm during the day, your floor will give off the heat it absorbed during the cold night. The reverse is also true. If it’s hot in the daytime and cold at night, the floor will release heat during the evening.

It does not! In fact, it’s a lot warmer than other flooring options, such as tile. That’s because a concrete slab makes for a great insulator. During the nighttime, it will release the heat it absorbed during the day.

Yes, we can! Bear in mind that while MPC floors are slip-resistant when it’s dry, they get very slippery when wet. The best no-slip options for polished concrete are grind and seal, and honed. You see, honed concrete has natural non-slip properties due to its grit. For grind and seal, we can apply a no-slip agent to the top coating. Both are excellent options for slip-resistant polished concrete!

Absolutely! When you select a high-gloss finish, it is highly reflective. It’s so reflective that it will bounce ambient light around the room from the windows. Our customers have told us they save up to and over 50% on their electricity bills thanks to this!

Polished concrete is an extremely durable flooring option. Having said that, the amount of durability depends on the type of polished concrete. MPC is the most durable option as it doesn’t have a coating on top. As a result, there’s nothing to scratch, damage, or wear away.

Grind and seal floors are slightly less durable due to the top coating. However, there are special coatings available to increase durability. Be sure to let us know what you need out of your floors when you consult with us so we can provide the best options!

You’ll love how easy it is to maintain your polished concrete! All you have to do is mop once a week with hot clean water. If you do use a cleaning solution, make sure that it’s PH-neutral. Also, rinse off the solution with clean water as soon as you’re done. If you should spill anything on your polished concrete, clean it up right away. That way, no liquid gets a chance to soak into the floor! For spot cleaning, a dry microfiber mop will get the job done.

Polished concrete is very eco-friendly and sustainable. It’s made from the most common mineral there is limestone. You can also make concrete from waste byproducts and recycled materials! This lessens the amount of waste that there is in the environment. Also, concrete can outperform timber, steel, carpet, and tiles. Concrete really is the ultimate green flooring option!

It’s actually the best option for you! That’s because polished concrete is antimicrobial-resistant. It will not allow for the growth of dust mites, toxic mould, dirt, pollen, or other contaminants. This makes it the perfect option for sufferers of asthma and allergies. You’ll be able to breathe like never before!

Questions About the Polishing Process

At My Floor, we use the latest and greatest equipment to eliminate dust. This equipment includes premium-grade Hepa filter vacuums attached to our grinders. That way, we suck the dust up as soon as it comes out! If we use our hand grinders, a minimal amount of dust will be generated. That’s why we clean the floor between each step. You will have a bit of residual dust once the job is complete, but not much.

One of the best things about MPC systems is that you can walk on them right away! There is no time period where you have to let a coating dry. That’s because there is no coating! However, you should avoid leaving water on the floor for 24-72 hours. For epoxy and grind and seal, we recommend waiting 24-48 hours for foot traffic. For vehicle traffic and heavy foot traffic, wait for at least 7 days.

It depends on a few key elements. The first is how big the area is, and if it’s open or a lot of confined spaces that require hand grinding. It also depends on the type of polished concrete system you install. We have MPC, Hiperfloor, Signature Floor, grind and seal, and honed concrete. It also depends on the level of gloss finish and stone exposure that you’d like to see. As a general example, a standard garage getting a grind and seal takes about 2-3 days. For a normal-sized house that has 100m2 of Hiperfloor, it takes around 5-6 days.

It depends on if you’re pouring a new slab or not. If you are, you can pick any colour you like! You also have full control over the aggregate exposure and colour. If you’re working with an existing slab, you’re at the mercy of whatever colour is inside of it. If you’re unhappy with this colour, we can add another dye on top to change it. Bear in mind that the colour will affect the look, feel, and cost of the polishing process!

While there are surcharges, our team at My Floor would be happy to polish during off-hours! Just let us know your availability whenever we consult with you, and we’ll make it happen.

The first step is for us to grind back the top layer of your concrete. This will remove some staining. If there’s still oil stains underneath, we can do what we call a purge. We will repeat the purging process until there is no oil left on your floor. Most of the time, grinding and purging are more than enough to remove oil stains. If you have a really bad stain that won’t budge, you can use a solid colour epoxy coating to cover it up!

Yes, we can! For non-slip, we recommend either honed concrete or a grind and seal system. Honed concrete has a rougher grit level, which makes it naturally slip-resistant. Grind and seal are glossier, but we can add no-slip agents to the surface.

It depends on a few things. First and foremost is the size of the area that we’re polishing. Also, it matters if the area is wide open or contains a lot of nooks and crannies that require handwork. The next factor is the type of polished concrete system you’re installing. The final factor is the amount of gloss finish and aggregate level. As a general rule of thumb, a grind and seal on a garage takes around 2-3 days. For a house with 100m2 of Hiperfloor installed, it takes around 5-6 days for completion.

Due to the detailed nature of the polishing process, we cannot. It’s a step-by-step process that needs to take place over the entire area. We must fully complete a step before we move on to the next one, so we can’t pick and choose spots. My Floor will need complete access to your floors during the entire process.

General Questions

We offer mechanically polished concrete systems such as Hiperfloor and Signature Floor. My Floor also offers grind and seal, honed concrete, and epoxy coatings.

If you have an MPC or honed concrete system, it will never fade or discolour with proper care! For grind and seal systems, they may discolour, scratch, crack, and peel over time. That’s why it’s important to reseal every 3-10 years. To avoid this, you can equip your grind and seal floors with a UV stable coating.

Mechanically polished concrete (MPC) is the truest form of polished concrete. That’s because it’s the concrete itself that gets polished. As a result, there is no topical coating involved. MPC systems are only for use indoors. That’s because they get very slippery when wet.

Grind and seal systems involve grinding back a layer of the slab to reveal stone exposure. From there, we add a sealant to the top layer. This is what gets polished and provides resistance and shine. Due to adding a no-slip agent to grind and seal floors, they have great use in both indoor and outdoor areas.

You can think of them as polar opposites of each other. Mechanically polished concrete is for indoor use only, and honed is for outdoors only. MPC floors are popular in art galleries, hotels, shops, and homes. Honed concrete is ideal for driveways, patios, and other heavy-traffic outdoor environments.

Honed concrete involves a finish of 60 to 120 grit. This thicker grit allows for natural slip-resistance and increased durability. That’s why honed concrete systems work so well outdoors. There is a sealer involved, but it penetrates deep into the concrete. As a result, only a matte finish is available.

Mechanically polished concrete is a more involved process. It entails densifying the concrete and then grinding it until it shines. You can select from a matte, semi-gloss, or high-gloss finish.

While we can dye the slabs with the same colour, the uptake won’t be the same. This is due to the nature of the way concrete slabs cure. We’re experts at MyFloor, and we can come as close as humanly possible.

There is a slight surcharge, but we’re happy to work during nights and weekends.

We make use of state-of-the-art equipment such as high-grade Hepa filters attached to our grinders. As a result, we’re able to suck up most of the dust that we generate. We also clean in-between hand grinding sessions due to the increased dust levels. There will be a small amount of residual dust once the job is complete, but not much.

With an MPC floor, you can walk on it straight away. There’s no need to wait for a coating to dry because there is no coating! However, you should wait to clean your floor with water for at least 24-72 hours. For epoxy coatings and grind and seal systems, allow no foot traffic for 24 hours―also, no heavy traffic for at least 7 days.

When dry, MPC floors are exceptionally slip-resistant. That all goes out the window when there’s water on the floor. That’s why we recommend grind and seal and honed concrete for outdoor use. Their slip-resistance will stand up to even the hardest rainfall!

You’ll be happy to know polished concrete is a sustainable and eco-friendly flooring option. That’s because it has thermal mass properties. That means that the floor can absorb heat and then release it slowly at night. That way, you can walk on your polished concrete at night barefoot without any trouble!

The thermal mass properties will preserve heat during the day and release it during the night. Its thermal mass properties are far greater than traditional flooring options.

To get rid of oil stains, we will grind back the top layer of concrete first. Most of the time, this is enough to get rid of any superficial stains. If they go deeper than that, we can do what we call a purge. It’s rare that purging and grinding won’t fix a stain, but we have a solution if it does occur. You can use a solid colour epoxy coating that will totally cover up the stains!

We can for honed concrete and grind and seal systems! Honed concrete is naturally slip-resistant due to its thicker grit. Grind and seal systems can have non-slip agents added to the top layer. MPC, on the other hand, is not slip-resistant and is generally used indoors only.

Factory and warehouse flooring needs to be durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. MyFloor would recommend epoxy coatings or grind and seal/MPC systems! They will more than get the job done in even the toughest industrial environment.

It all depends on a few factors. We need to know how big the area is if there are any hard-to-reach areas, and what type of system you want. We also need to know your desired gloss finish and aggregate exposure. Our team will get all this information from you during your initial consult! As a general rule, a grind and seal system for a garage takes about 2-3 days. For Hiperfloor in a regular-sized home, it takes around 5-6 days.

Yes, you can. It’s important to pick the right system, though. We would recommend a grind and seal with a no-slip agent. It’s also watertight, so no water will get to the concrete underneath. If you have Hiperfloor or another MPC system, we recommend putting down a non-slip mat to protect you.

Not normally. My Floor is here to handle all the polishing and grinding. We do network with concreters that we can get you in contact with!

It shouldn’t be a problem at all! In fact, that’s a big selling point for polished concrete. It’s completely stain-resistant! We do recommend that you clean up any spills as quickly as possible.

You sure can! There are two main things to consider when doing so. Suspended slabs must have higher strength (mPA) than slabs on the ground. As a result, if you select full aggregate exposure, you won’t get the same results that you do on the ground. The next thing to consider is the normal grinding machines weigh 400 kgs, so we can’t carry them upstairs. We’ll have to make use of a crane to polish your upper floors.

No more than any other flooring surface! Unfortunately, it’s a common misconception that polished concrete is noisy. In fact, it’s the insulation, wall properties, and ceiling properties that determine noise. Polished concrete is an ideal option for any home or business, and the acoustic levels are low.

Sadly, we cannot. Polishing concrete is a very involved and delicate step-by-step process. Each step has to get completed over the entire surface before the next one can begin. My Floor will need complete access to your surfaces during the process.

Feel free to visit our showroom! There you’ll find a ton of polished concrete samples to view. You can also take a look at our virtual reality software system! It will allow you to place all our concrete finishes in a realistic setting. Check out our website for the hours of availability!

Health and Environment

No, it will not! That’s because of its excellent thermal mass properties. It will absorb heat during the day so it can release it at night. This will help save on your heating and cooling bills!

Yes, it does! That’s thanks to its reflectiveness. It will bounce around the natural ambient light in the area. As a result, you save a ton of money on electricity. Our customers have reported saving over 50% on their monthly power bills!

Polished concrete is a very environmentally friendly flooring option. That’s because concrete gets made from the most common mineral on earth, limestone. There’s also concrete that features recycled materials within it. This reduces the amount of waste in our environment. Concrete is also a small contributor to greenhouse gases.

Yes, it will! In fact, polished concrete is your best option. It won’t allow bacteria, toxic mould, dust, dirt, or anything else to grow or accumulate on it. You’ll love how clear you’ll be able to breathe with your new floors!

Absolutely. There are many other products that provide low-VOC options for our processes.

Colours and Options

You can, but you should know not all concrete absorbs colour at the same rate. As a result, the colours might not be uniform. Check out some of our available colors below!

We can use the same dye, but there’s no guarantee that it will absorb at the same rate. We’re professionals at MyFloor, and we will come as close to perfect as we can.

If you’re pouring a new slab for your project, then yes, you can! You will have full control over the concrete mix, coloured dye, and aggregate colour. If you’re working with an existing slab, you’re at the mercy of whatever dye and aggregate are already there. We can add an additional coloured dye on top if you aren’t happy with the colour.

There are as many color choices as there are paint options! Check out the chart below to see our extensive colour choices.

You can if you’re pouring a new slab. Then you have all the customizable options that you’d like. Existing slabs can only have new dyes added on top.

Pricing

Mechanically polished concrete has a low lifetime cost. This is due to its nature and the fact that it has no coating to deteriorate. Grind and seal systems cost less up-front but can be more expensive over time due to re-applying the sealer. Other factors that affect price are the area’s size, stone exposure, gloss finish, and more. Reach out to us for a free consultation on your first project at My Floor to learn more!

We usually work it out on a square-meter rate. The price depends on the procedure as well. MPC, grind and seal, level of aggregate exposure, and concrete condition are all price factors. Any jobs that are less than 30m2 end up priced at a job rate rather than a square meter rate.

Absolutely! Its reflectiveness will bounce back ambient light. You can save as much as 50% on your monthly electricity bills!

It will depend on the quality of the tile. We find that we’re at a similar price or slightly cheaper than a high-quality tile. Don’t forget that tile involves purchasing the tile AND installation. Polished concrete is one joint cost of supply and install.

Some contractors are less reputable than others. They may give you the cheapest option, a grind and seal, but charge you for mechanically polished concrete. That means that you will end up with a floor that requires ongoing maintenance. This will accrue even more charges over time! That’s why you need to use My Floor to always get a fair price and honest, quality work.

If you choose the mid-range option, you’re pricing yourself out of MPC systems. The MPC finish is the one that 98% of our clients go for. It’s longer-lasting, is the most durable, and requires little maintenance. The mid-range would only cover grind and seal, which requires costly re-applications in the future.

Locations

My Floor does work in Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast. We’re willing to travel outside those areas for a small surcharge. We also offer extended warranties and free estimates!

Our area of influence stretches from the northern end of Sunshine Coast down to West Toowoomba and everywhere in between. We can travel further than those locations, but it depends on the project. Travel fees may also come into play for jobs outside our regular areas of service.
