External Residential Flooring Ideas

There’s nothing like spending a relaxing day at your pool or on your porch/patio admiring the sunset. If you want your dream home in Brisbane to have elegant outdoor areas, you need the right floors. Ideally, you need a surface that’s anti-slip, easy to clean, looks great, and won’t need many repairs. So what should you use? Brick? Timber? Traditional concrete? Well, you should know that all these options have notable downsides. Here’s a look at why these options aren’t ideal for your home in Brisbane, Gold Coast, or Sunshine Coast. Then,

Timber Decking/Flooring Disadvantages

A lot of homeowners choose timber for their deck or outdoor areas. This option isn’t the best choice for a few reasons, including:

  • Timber is prone to cracking, scratches, and stains. Also, you get what you pay for when it comes to timber. Cheaper options will have a very low life expectancy. You also have to worry about splintering, which can lead to injuries.
  • Timber is very high maintenance. Your timber flooring will require annual staining and painting. It’s not only time-consuming but is also quite expensive. Timber is also relatively weak to the elements, so expect excessive heat and cold to warp and wear it down.
  • Timber is susceptible to water damage. It’s also not an anti-slip surface, so expect it to be very slick when wet. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain, there are far better options than timber.

Paved Flooring Disadvantages

Paver is another popular choice for outdoor areas in residential homes. While it can look decorative, brick can be quite dangerous. Here are its main disadvantages as an outdoor flooring surface:

  • Pavers are very heavy. Due to its weight, it can be hard to install paved floors without proper support. You definitely won’t be able to use paved flooring on any second-floor outdoor areas.
  • Paved flooring is rigid and inflexible. If you take a tumble on your brick floors, you could get seriously injured. Paved flooring is exceptionally unforgiving on anything that happens to fall on it. Paved flooring is a dangerous option if you have children or older adults living at your home.
  • Mould build-up. Paved flooring is a very absorbent surface. That means that it will soak up any water. While this is good news for slipping, it’s terrible for mold. That’s because mold thrives in damp, dark areas like the inside of pavers. If you don’t clean them very carefully, mould and mildew growth can occur.

Traditional Concrete Disadvantages

Okay, so now you know that timber and pavers have real downsides, but what about concrete? Well, concrete that isn’t polished or resurfaced has a lot of drawbacks too! They include:

  • Regular concrete is not very durable. Concrete is prone to cracking due to its low tensile strength. Not only that, but it’s not very resistant to high impacts. If you drop anything heavy on concrete, expect some severe damage to your slab.
  • Concrete stains very quickly. Should you spill any liquids or chemicals onto your concrete, it will stain very quickly. Nobody likes looking at stained concrete while walking down to your pool!

Since you know the drawbacks of traditional outdoor floors, it’s time for My Floor to take over! Here’s a look at our most popular outdoor flooring options and their advantages.

Honed concrete is what we strongly recommend for outdoor areas. That’s because it has increased durability over all our other concrete polishing options. Its increased strength is due to the impregnating sealer that penetrates deep into the concrete. It differs from other sealants that we use, which remain on top to deliver resistance and sheen. With honed concrete, the sealer adds increased durability by soaking it into the slab. As a result, honed concrete is super strong and can withstand massive impacts and traffic. Honed concrete is excellent for:

  • Driveways
  • Walkways and pathways
  • Outdoor pool areas
  • Patios
  • Backyards

Not only that, but honed concrete is also slip-resistant. That means that you never have to worry about your pool area getting slick! That’s excellent news if you have small children or older people living at your home or visiting your pool.

For honed concrete, you aren’t able to select a gloss level. That’s due to the sealer that soaks inside of the concrete instead of laying on top. While your floor won’t shine, you’ll still be able to select the level of stone exposure. You can choose from nil, medium, or full aggregate exposure for your convenience.

Honed concrete is also straightforward to maintain and clean. It’s got an incredibly long lifespan as well. Not only that, but it’s resistant to spills, stains, allergens, and more!

Grind and seal polished concrete is the choice you want to go with if you want outdoor flooring that’s reflective and shiny. It’s very similar to honed concrete, with the only difference being the sealant used. Grind and seal systems use a sealer that lays on top to add resistance and gloss sheen. As a result, you get full control over the gloss level as well as aggregate exposure. We can also add a non-slip coating to the floor to make sure it’s suitable for the outdoors.

While not as durable as honed concrete, grind and seal systems are still solid. They’re more than durable enough to withstand any traffic or massive impacts. You can also use your grind and seal concrete for both indoors and outdoors. That’s great if you’re looking to flow your floors from inside to outside seamlessly. Grind and seal concrete is also resistant to chemicals, allergens, staining, and more! It’s a fantastic option for any outdoor area you may have.

Resurfacing concrete is a viable option if you don’t want to get rid of your existing concrete surface. Maybe your concrete got cracked or stained, and you want to fix it without starting over. Concrete resurfacing involves using a thin cement overlay that’s mixed with bonding agents. It will use your existing concrete as a foundation. After it adheres to the underlying surface, it will create a beautiful, brand-new floor.

Resurfacing goes above and beyond just repairing a broken surface. Instead, it serves to fortify and reinforce the underlying concrete. The result is a surface that’s durable, easy to clean, resilient, and more! If you don’t want to get rid of your traditional outdoor concrete, resurfacing is a great way to go!

Epoxy coatings are all the rage for garages and industrial environments. An epoxy coating is a hard resinous material that reinforces and protects a surface. An epoxy flake floor involves adding vinyl chips to an epoxy coating. These chips add strength, slip resistance, and a decorative look. There are many stylish colors and designs you can select for your flake floors. Since they’re slip-resistant and durable, they’re an excellent choice for outdoor areas!

Polished concrete isn’t always a viable option. You may not have the right type of concrete slab, or you don’t like the colour of the existing concrete. If this sounds like you, then polished concrete veneers are great! Much like a dental veneer, they’re a thin covering of an existing surface. Veneers are only 10mm to 12mm thick, which means they can go over any existing floor. Since they’re so thin, you have full control over the shine, aggregate exposure, and more. We can also add slip-resistant coatings to your veneers. If you have a driveway or walkway with worn-out timber or concrete, a veneer can save the day. They’re also very affordable!

Cleaning and sealing your concrete is another excellent option if you want to repair and fortify your existing concrete. Our fantastic team will use power washers, cutting edge sealers, and top-level caulk to get the job done. First, we’ll completely clean your concrete. From there, we’ll use several sealers to provide water resistance and durability. The sealing and caulking will fill in any micro cracks and imperfections.

If you’ve got an existing concrete surface in your pool area, reach out to us at My Floor to clean it and seal it! That way, you’ll enjoy increased durability as well as slip-resistance for your protection.
